Another exciting school year is under way.  It's going to be a GREAT year!

Being a school nurse is a challenging specialty.  We are the only healthcare professional in the educational setting. The school nurse should not be a substitute for your child's medical provider, but an extension. We must be ready to deal with pediatric issues but also adult problems.

My responsibilites include:
  • health counseling, both students and staff
  • vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings
  • referral and follow-up of identified problems
  • assisting parents with obtaining needed services for their child
  • prevention of communicable disease by maintaining immunization records and excluding those with possible communicable illnesses
  • provision of emergency care
  • liaison with community health resources
  • maintenance of student health records
  • reporting child abuse as required by law
  • administration of medication
  • consulting and coordinating with other student services and related instructional programs including but not limited to special services and health instruction
  • completing state required reports

IMPORTANT REMINDER

SSISD's medication policy requires that students bring medication from home.  The medication must be in the original, labeled container.  (Prescription medication and over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil should be sent in the original bottle.)  You can write your child's name on the bottle if you are sending over-the-counter medication.  I also need a note with details about what time to give the medicine and how much to give.  Please tell your student to drop the medication off in the nurse's office first thing upon arriving at school.  They are not to self-administer any medication.  Please call the school nurse if you have any questions about your child taking medication at school.
